Kenneth Higashimachi

Kenneth Higashimachi

Kenneth Higashimachi (1901-1991) was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was a ‘nisei’ - the first generation of children born to Japanese immigrants. In the 1920s Kenneth traveled to the mainland to study at the Chicago Art Institute and graduated in Commercial Arts in 1923.

Upon graduating, he returned to Oahu where he painted over 10,000 paintings, mostly watercolor, sumi ink & some acrylic. Most of the paintings here represent Hawaii circa 1940-1960, a time when there was few structures on the shorelines of the islands. This collection was unearthed by his granddaughter April Higashi while cleaning out his house in Oahu. The paintings that survived the elements will slowly be added for sale on this site.

MAUI FUNDRAISER - $50 from the sale of each painting will be donated to the Maui Strong Fund to help aid the victims and relief efforts on Maui.
